A New Era of Public Transport: Riyadh Metro Opens Today

Discover how Riyadh Metro is revolutionizing public transport in the Saudi capital. Explore its state-of-the-art infrastructure, enhanced connectivity, and sustainable solutions, shaping the future of urban mobility.

The much-anticipated Riyadh Metro officially opens today, marking a significant milestone in the city’s infrastructure. As the largest metro system in the Middle East and the world’s longest driverless train network, this project is set to revolutionize urban mobility in Riyadh.

The metro, inaugurated by King Salman on Wednesday, is expected to ease traffic congestion in the city by up to 30%, according to the Royal Commission for Riyadh City. Alongside the metro launch, the city introduced the DARB app—a digital platform designed to enhance the travel experience by integrating various transport services.

Out of the metro’s six lines, three will begin operations today, covering 176 kilometers and featuring 85 stations, including four major hubs. The initial phase includes:

  • Line 1 (Blue Line): Al Olaya to Al Batha, 24 stations

  • Line 4 (Yellow Line): King Khalid International Airport Road, 9 stations.

  • Line 6 (Purple Line): Abdulrahman bin Auf Road to Sheikh Hassan bin Hussein bin Ali Road, 11 stations.

On December 15, Line 2 (Red Line) along King Abdullah Road and Line 5 (Green Line) along King Abdulaziz Road will become operational. The full network will be completed on January 5, 2025, with the launch of Line 3 (Orange Line) along Madinah Road.

The Metro ticket is the same as the Riyadh Bus ticket, DARB and the ticket starts from 4sr.

SR 4 - 2 Hours

SR 20 - 3 Days

SR 40 - 7 Days

SR 140 -30 Days

Children under the age of 6 can travel free.

The Riyadh Metro is more than just a transport project—it’s a step towards a smarter, more connected city. With its phased rollout, the system is set to become a cornerstone of Riyadh’s vision for sustainable urban development.
