Explore the latest marvel in the Arabian Gulf—a giant oil rig-inspired attraction that's transforming the region's skyline. This ambitious project blends engineering brilliance with entertainment, offering a unique experience that celebrates the region's rich industrial heritage while pushing the boundaries of modern tourism.
The Oil Park Development Company (OPDC), the developer behind THE RIG project, has teamed up with International Maritime Industries (IMI) to enhance maritime operations at the world’s first offshore adventure tourism destination. This new partnership will see IMI provide ferries and additional maritime services to improve the visitor experience at THE RIG, which is inspired by offshore oil platforms.
The Rig is the world's first adventure tourism destination modeled after an actual oil rig. Created by the Oil Park Development Company (OPDC) with backing from the Public Investment Fund (PIF), it will cover an impressive 300,000 square meters and feature everything from resorts to adventure sports. This unique destination aims to transform sea sports and leisure activities while honoring Saudi Arabia's rich oil and gas heritage.
OPDC’s CEO, Raed Bakhrji, and his team recently visited IMI's headquarters where they were welcomed by IMI’s CEO, Abdullah Al Ghamdi. This meeting formalized their collaboration to develop the maritime infrastructure and logistics needed for easy access to THE RIG.
IMI’s expertise in shipbuilding, repair, and offshore services will help make operations at THE RIG more efficient and improve service standards. This partnership, involving IMI and OPDC—a company owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF)—is set to enhance THE RIG’s operational capabilities, reinforcing its status as a top adventure tourism destination.
Perched whimsically in the Arabian Gulf, The Rig will be situated 40 kilometers from the Eastern Coast and close to Al Juraid Island.
Raed Bakhrji emphasized, “Working with IMI will enhance the maritime experience at THE RIG. Their expertise is crucial for smooth operations, which will enrich the visitor experience. This effort highlights our dedication to creating a world-class adventure tourism spot that aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 by advancing the Kingdom’s maritime and tourism sectors.”
Reaching the destination will be an adventure in itself. Travelers can arrive by ferry, yacht, cruise, or helicopter—ideal for those who prefer to travel in style, as The Rig features its own helipad.
Abdullah Al Ghamdi expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “We are excited to work with OPDC on THE RIG. This collaboration demonstrates our commitment to growth and innovation in maritime services. By leveraging our extensive experience, IMI aims to support various sectors and contribute to the national economy.
The Rig is a revolutionary tourism destination set above the ground, offering over 70 unique attractions and activities. These will include water sports, extreme adventures, amusement parks, and indoor entertainment options. The Rig will feature three hotels with a total of 800 rooms, each providing breathtaking views of the surrounding waters. For dining, there will be eleven restaurants on-site, so you won’t need to leave The Rig to satisfy your appetite.
