Saudi Arabia's Minister of Transport and Logistics Services, Saleh Al-Jasser, announced that the Riyadh Metro will begin operations this year, as previously stated by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC).
He highlighted that Riyadh Metro is the largest metro project globally built in a single phase.
Al-Jasser shared these insights during an interview with Al-Arabiya Business while attending the launch of Maersk’s largest integrated logistics zone in the Middle East at Jeddah Islamic Port on Wednesday.
The project, a collaboration between the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) and Maersk, involves investments of SR1.3 billion.
This new logistics zone aims to enhance supply chain efficiency, handling 200,000 standard containers annually and is expected to create over 2,500 jobs.
According to Al-Jasser, the zone provides comprehensive logistics solutions, boosting the sector's economic value and supporting the national transport and logistics strategy led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
“Our goal is to make Saudi Arabia a global logistics hub, taking advantage of its strategic location,” he said.
Al-Jasser noted that the Maersk Logistics Zone covers 225,000 square meters and can handle various goods, including refrigerated items at temperatures as low as -25°C, chemicals, and other products.
In 2023, Saudi Arabia made significant progress in the Logistics Performance Index, ranking 17th globally. Maritime connectivity indicators have also doubled in the past three years, complementing advancements in air and multi-modal transportation.
The minister praised the rapid completion of the Maersk Logistics Zone, completed in just 18 months with significant private sector investment.
He also mentioned that this zone is one of 18 signed logistics projects across the Kingdom, aiming to expand to 59 logistics zones by 2030, up from the current 22.
Several new zones are being developed in partnership with international companies.
Al-Jasser revealed that private sector investments in these logistics zones within Saudi ports have exceeded SR10 billion.
Additionally, 12 more agreements are expected in the coming years, further strengthening the logistics network by integrating with the country’s road and airport systems.
