Traffic Penalties in Saudi Arabia 2023

The Saudi government has just introduced this category of updated traffic violations.



Here is a list of traffic violations along with the associated penalties. The fines are grouped into eight basic categories.


The Categories are as follows:



Category 1: SR 20,000 to SR 60,000

In this category, violators of the law who commit traffic violations face fines ranging from 20,000 to 60,000 Saudi Riyals. The offender will also receive 24 points for traffic violations.

  • SR 20,000 fine for first-time drifting.

  • SR 40,000 in fines for repeated drifting.

  • SR 60,000 fine for a third offense of drifting.

Category 2: SR 5,000 to SR 10,000

These violations are detailed in the list below:

  • Driving when intoxicated or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Moreover, the offender receives 24 points for traffic violations for this offense.

  • Navigating a valley while it's flooded.

  • If pet owner fails to keep their domestic animals away from the edge of the road.

  • Constructing a road without notifying the appropriate authorities.

  • Conceal or modify the car or vehicle's chassis number.

Category 3: SR 3,000 to SR 6,000

The following updated traffic offense fines fall under this category. :

  • If the motorist moves forward with the car while the red light is on.

  • Don't completely stop at a red light.

  • Automobiles compete on public roadways.

  • Install the machinery and illumination seen in government and emergency vehicles.

  • Catching up with or passing a stopped school bus carrying pupils. Moreover, the offender receives four traffic violation points for this offense.

  • Destroying or tampering with traffic signals and sign equipment.

  • Installing on the car unapproved accessories and gadgets.

  • Placing posters or branding on vehicles is against public morality.

  • If a vehicle is struck by a driver who was traveling in the wrong direction on a street or road. Moreover, the offender receives 12 points for moving violations.

Category 4: SR 1,000 to SR 2,000

The following updated traffic offense fines fall under this category. :

  • Stopping or leaving a vehicle parked on a railroad track. The perpetrator also receives six points for traffic violations for the incident.

  • Transporting more people than a vehicle is legally allowed to carry.

  • if the driver drives in the yellow lane or disregards the clearly marked road lane limitations.

  • Driving a car with a number plate that has been altered or stolen.

  • Leaving parked cars on a public street or walkway.

  • If the driver refuses to display the Istimara and Iqama when asked.

  • If a motorist passes another car while navigating turns, curves, or an ascent.

  • Fails to export a vehicle on schedule or as promised.

  • The act of riding a motorcycle without a helmet. Moreover, the offender will receive two traffic violation points for this offense.

Category 5: SR 500 to SR 900

The following updated traffic offense fines fall under this category. :

  • If the driver lacks a current driver's license and is using the car or another vehicle.

  • Exceeding or exceeding by more than 25 km/h the posted speed limit.

  • Using an emergency vehicle's siren or ringing it without a need.

  • Violating the law on car tinting.

  • Speeding through traffic. Moreover, the offender receives eight points for driving violations.

  • Avoiding stopping at the stop sign and continuing through the traffic.

  • If a motorist fails to utilize their headlights at night or in poor conditions.

  • If the driver disregards the manual traffic police signals. Moreover, it assesses eight points for traffic violations.

  • Driving while taking insufficient or improper breaks, endangers other people's life.

  • If a person operates a vehicle in a tunnel without a headlamp.

  • Using a phone while operating a vehicle. Moreover, the offender receives two points for the traffic infraction.

  • Operating or loading a truck improperly, transporting a load in the open without correctly securing it with ropes, etc. Four traffic penalty points will be assessed for the violation.


Category 6: SR 500 to SR 900

Below are the traffic offense fines that fall under this category. :

  • Exceeding the vehicle's maximum speed restriction by more than 25 km/h.

  • Accelerating past the official checkpoint at a rate greater than 25 km/h. The offender will also receive four points for traffic violations.

  • Crossing a lane of traffic where it is not allowed. Four points for driving violations are also assessed.

  • Any unauthorized modification to a vehicle's body carries a 4-point fine for the offense.

  • If a person operates a car that pollutes the environment.

  • Driving while breaking traffic laws, rules, and directives. Moreover, the offender will receive six points for driving violations.

  • Using a vehicle for unauthorized or criminal purposes.

  • Placing passengers in cars in places where they are not permitted.

  • Putting things or objects on public highways puts people's safety in peril.

  • Abrupt and unnecessary braking.

  • Preventing the transit of emergency or VIP vehicles.

  • Driving in Saudi Arabia with a license that has expired.

  • Slowing down or stopping in traffic, disrupts the efficient flow of transportation.

  • Without applying the handbrake, parking, or leaving the car on a slope.

Category 7: SR 100 to SR 300

  • Picking one's nose while operating a vehicle.

  • Not fitting trailers with the required equipment.

  • Driving a car despite Fahas.

  • Failing to maintain the recommended and safe spacing between two cars.

  • Utilizing bright headlights to break traffic laws.

  • Leaving the car unattended in a public place or on a road.

  • Putting bars inside the vehicle to block the driver's vision.

  • Driving any car or truck without a current Istimara.

  • Driving a car without having the title transferred lawfully.

  • Driving while not wearing seatbelt results in two traffic infraction points.

  • If there are no child seat safety features in the car.

  • Vehicle lacking a functioning horn.

  • Without using an indication, changing lanes.

  • Driving backward on a road for more than 20 meters.

Category 8: SR 100 to SR 150

This category bears the lowest fine ratio. In the following situations, it imposes a minimum of 100 Saudi Riyals in accordance with this category.

  • Throwing anything while the car is going, including objects.

  • Stepping out of or entering a moving vehicle.

  • The signal place for pedestrians is not being followed by them.

  • Inappropriate parking or vehicle stops are prohibited.

  • Driving a car without adequate and current insurance.

  • Running the engine while leaving or parking the car.
